It's only a mile, but a mile trudging in an inky black downward spiral through a conjoined stalactite and stalagmite at the end of a string of other people carefully feeling their way down the uneven stairs. At first, the only sounds were the shuffle of feet along the rough dripstone, everyone tempering their excitement with care on the steps, the interior of the stalactite making every sound a giant ripple. After about an hour some of the travelers began to talk amongst themselves, and Delphine Whipple, to take her thoughts from the cycle of questions tripping through her head, asks the man in front of her what brings him to the fallen city - business or pleasure.
An answer of 'revenge' would not have deterred her questions if it had not been in a certain tone, and Delphine instead nodded her dark-haired head, cleared her throat, pleasantly hoped he would get what he sought with broad smile that reaches to her hazel eyes, and returned to the circus of her thoughts for the remaining hour.
When finally they stepped from the stalagmite into the hazy moonish light of London, Delphine stood transfixed as the others rushed past her to their intended destination, barely able to believe she was really, truly in the fallen city she's heard so much about.
Off into the city she goes.
