A pair of...shoes?

Delphine arrives back to her room for the night after finding her place of employment and meeting so many new faces only to see a parcel nuzzled up to her door, and, once inside with the paper off, a pair of shiny black shoes--in her size.

Surely, this must be a gift from her parents or perhaps her sister, knowing her penchant for roaming about a town to discover its nooks and crannies. A card attached suggests the very same, until she reads the words scribbled within.

I know your FACE. A VISION was vouchsafed to me. You will bring the TRUTH. They see me WATCHING THEM but they do not know. Lies and TRUTH, lies and TRUTH. I will find you soon.

The disconcerting message makes her skin crawl, and her first instinct is to burn it in the fire, to remove all trace of either of these interruptions to the perfectly wonderful first day of her new life in London.

But then she tucks it away, wondering if it might be a hint towards something else. The shoes, however, are fully examined for any flaws or tricks, and then are placed across the small hole of a room. The candlelight gleams off the toes like they were made of mirrors.

Delphine pinches the wick and curls into her bed to prepare for her second day.
